Athena Veatch - Owner and Founder of SB Animal Things

"Athena, there are already so many pet professionals here in Santa Barbara; why do you want to start a pet business?"

I got this question a lot when I first decided to start SB Animal Things. My educational background is in culinary arts and automotive technology; what could I offer as a pet professional?
What most people don't know is that I spent my childhood fostering and rescuing animals. As a kid, I was often late for school because my mom never hesitated to stop and help strays if we ever saw them. We developed a relationship with animal control and the local humane society as we often brought in lost pets or reported injured animals. The dogs we would foster were never easy; we always took home the intense dogs with behavioral problems to better their chances of finding loving homes. I spent my summers working at goat ranches in Northern California and spent my free time after school volunteering at the shelters and rehabilitation clinics here in town. My passion for animals has always been lit, and I was lucky enough to have an animal-loving family to foster that flame.

From a young age, I was taught to be patient with animals. To watch them, observe their body language, and respect them as individuals. No two dogs are the same, and no two animals tick precisely alike. I was raised to be able to see the subtle cues in dog body language and adapt how I behave to fit the situation in front of me. Working with human-aggressive fosters, dog-reactive rescues, and even incredibly fearful canines, I gained experience with some of the most intense behavioral issues from an early age. My role in these fosters' lives as a young kid was to learn how to manage their various, sometimes dangerous, behaviors. But, as I grew older, I began to join my parents in helping begin to rehabilitate these dogs. We worked with trainers to shift these dogs' perspectives and successfully curbed many of their most intense triggers.
Since then, I have used my childhood experiences to adopt two large rescue mixes who came to me with various behavioral issues of their own. My boy Baloo is touch-sensitive, and our training journey together has included several bites. And Alfie, my sweet, goofy guy, came to me a pushy, stubborn boy with no manners who didn't know how to interact with other dogs appropriately. And now Clara, my newest addition to the family, was so sensitive that just about any noise would completely shut her down. Each was entirely different, each needing a completely different training approach that I have had to curate. I am immensely proud to say that Baloo has been incident free for almost four years, Alfie has become my most social dog, and Clara has gained confidence I never imagined she would have found.

But why am I telling you all this? Well, I remember being a young adult who wanted to travel and being petrified of leaving my dogs with a sitter. Anyone with a dog who has needed behavior modification will know that one "bad day" can set your training back by months. Simply put, I couldn't find anyone in town I would have trusted my dogs with then. I missed family vacations, skipped concerts, and passed up day trips because I felt nobody could handle my dogs. My mission is to be the reason someone else can take a vacation. I want to be the reason you can go on that day trip, have that weekend to yourself, and enjoy your time away from home without stressing out about your pet(s).
Maybe your dog isn't friendly towards other dogs and needs to avoid them altogether. Or perhaps they don't like strangers or kids and need to be given space when passing people. Maybe your dog is incredibly friendly but gets over-aroused quickly and doesn't have the proper manners to socialize appropriately. Maybe it's just that your dog is anxious and destroys things around the house, sometimes even injuring themselves, when left alone. Whatever the case, I am confident I can work with them. I have a heart for dogs of all kinds, from seniors to puppies; I would love nothing more than to spend time with your pet(s). So, no matter where your dog falls on the grand spectrum of behavior, I assure you that you'll always find a patient, compassionate, experienced helper in me.
